A round, cheerful purple monster with little horns and big eyes

Do you remember… Moshi Monsters?

Moshi Monsters arrived on 16 April 2008, from Mind Candy, a games company in London. You adopted one of six monsters: Katsuma, Poppet, Furi, Diavlo, Luvli or Zommer. Then you named it and moved it into a room of its own in Monstro City.

You earned Rox, the game’s money, by solving daily puzzles, then spent them on furniture, food and very silly hats. Along the way you collected Moshlings, tiny pets with names that sounded like a sneeze, and left messages on your friends’ pinboards.

It wasn’t only on screen. There were magazines, trading cards, toys and a film, and for a while it felt as though every school bag in Britain had a Moshling dangling off it.

The game ran on Flash, and the original servers closed on 13 December 2019, a year before Flash itself was switched off. If you can still name your monster without thinking, it got its claws into you good and proper.
