A whiteboard with a red heart drawn on it and a marker pen on its ledge

Do you remember… the Bebo whiteboard?

If you were on Bebo in its heyday, your profile came with a whiteboard, and your friends were the artists. Visitors could pick up the drawing tools and leave a picture right there on your page for everyone to see. Some were sweet: hearts, flowers, your name in wobbly bubble letters. Some were in-jokes. Some were, frankly, terrible attempts at drawing you.

Bebo was huge in Britain and Ireland in the mid-2000s, and the whiteboard was part of what made a profile feel like your bedroom wall rather than a form to fill in. A new drawing felt like getting a card through the letterbox.

Nobody was much good at drawing with a mouse, which was half the charm. A wonky sun and a heart from your best friend meant more than any masterpiece.

When Bebo tried a comeback in 2014, its teaser video promised that the whiteboard was coming back. Some memories simply refuse to be rubbed out.
